Animation directed by Vasily Livanov, after a tale by M Maeterlinck
An wonderful animation applying foto collages mixed with drawn animation, in a neatly restored version, although the format that I found in is not ideal for youtube. Nevertheless it's clearer then any other version I know.
Maeterlinck posseses an oldfashioned, outdated, woolly sort of spiritualism mixed with left wing sympathies, that's boring to read in this era, but works out wonderfully well in this animated version.
Livanov was an art gruaduate as well as an actor graduate and film director he worked at soyuzmultfim from 1966 - 1973, his acting career streched out much longer (1959-2008), and brought him much fame for the role of Sherlock Holmes in the Russian TV series, he also kept writing scenarios for soyuzmult, wrote many novels and biographies, directed films and voice acted in many animations, films, videogames etc. He was Crocodile Ghena in Cheburashka and The Boa in 38 parrot to name his most known voiceacting roles He directed 4 animation for soyuzmultfilm in the time he worked there.
